Speaking with The Escapist in a new interview, project lead David Kalina explained that the team is looking at “new worlds” to explore in the future and has started to “poke around” with some new, early-stage project ideas. (Sorry.) Unknown Worlds, the studio behind the game, was bought up by PUBG Battlegrounds developer/publisher Krafton in October of last year.Subnautica: Below Zero launches tomorrow, but developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment is already experimenting and planning its next game. For now, we’ll just have to wait and… sea. We’ll probably be waiting a while before we hear any more on a Subnautica follow-up. That started off as an expansion, before it became a full sequel. Follow-up Subnautica: Below Zero took things to more frosty climes, mixing in some land-based action to boot. Of course, the big twist is that the game takes place almost entirely underwater. Similar to other survival games, they’ll have to forage, hunt and craft while trying not to become lunch for the local wildlife. In case you’re not familiar, Subnautica tasks players with surviving on an oceanic planet. They also note they’d like someone who’s comfortable with live development, which again tracks with the first two games as they spent a good while in early access before their releases proper.

The team are after someone with familiarity with an open world game, and who is passionate about speculative science fiction. The job specifications seem to imply it’ll follow a similar path to the original and its sequel Subnautica: Below Zero. Obviously, there’s little detail at this early stage. The potential applicant has the chance to work with the team “to tell compelling, dramatic stories in the context of the game experience.” They also will be helping to “establish the narrative direction for a beloved franchise.” Specifically, the team is after a Senior Narrative Designer to work on “the next game in the Subnautica universe”. It appears that a new game in the Subnautica series is in the works at developer Unknown Worlds.Īs spotted by Games Radar, the studio revealed the news by way of a job listing late last week.
